SVAN gallery open today with artists

ORTHVILLE — The Sacandaga Valley Arts Gallery and Gift Shop, located at 303 S. Main St. will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Small Business Saturday, when artists will be available to demonstrate and discuss their arts with visitors or participate in an activity.

“Those who come are sure to enjoy the offerings of our participating artists and a gallery full of wonderful art for your viewing enjoyment and gift purchases,” said Gallery Coordinator Sandra Peters in a news release. “The beautiful space in which our SVAN Gallery and Gift Shop resides offers visitors warmth, art and enjoyment! SVAN is grateful to the First United Methodist congregation in Northville for its generous gift of providing the Arts Center a home for its member-artists’ creative works.”

Mindful of the concerns of the COVID-19 crisis, SVAN is adhering to all precautions required: Masks are required while inside the gallery. Demonstrating artists will be in separate locations and wearing masks. Sanitizer is available at the front desk. Participants are asked to sign in with a phone number in the event that contact tracing becomes necessary. And SVAN volunteers are committed to sanitizing surfaces and gallery areas as may be necessary. Visitors will be guided to keep safe distances from one another.

From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Carolyn Learch, a longtime member of SVAN, who contributes jewelry and fabric arts to the gallery on a regular basis and may be often found working at the front desk, is bringing her collection of beads to the gallery and invites you to join her in making a simple beaded bracelet for yourself or as a gift. Children must be accompanied by an adult. This activity is offered at no cost to participants as long as supplies last.

From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., SVAN member and artist, Constance A. Dodge will be at the SVAN Gallery & Gift Shop demonstrating how to paint. All are welcome to stop by and visit with Dodge. Learn about her career in the arts and to watch create art with paints.

From her website, www.constanceadodge.com, Dodge conveys that her paintings are “inspired not only by the light and color in nature, but also by [my] inner vision embracing archetypal images. Much of my work in oils portrays glimpses of the human condition. My love of drawing is met by working with pastels, which allows me the freedom to capture the immediacy of the moment. For me, art is spirit.”

Dodge “has taught fine arts for 31 years,” dedicating the majority of her experience to “developing the artistic talents of high school students.” However, she taught full time at Adirondack Community College for two years, and she has been an adjunct instructor at Sage Junior College, the College of Saint Rose, Empire State College, and Goddard College.

For 23 years, Dodge’s permanent exhibit space was the Amos Eno Gallery in New York City. Her work appears in many private collections, both nationally and internationally including the National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington D.C. and Artpool in Budapest, Hungary. Her work has also appeared in New York Magazine. Regionally, she is a professional member of the Guild of Adirondack Artists and the former director of the Oakroom Artists, a group in existence for 52 years.

The SVAN Gallery & Gift Shop showcases and sells artwork of members of the Sacandaga Valley Arts Network, and is open on Fridays 3 to 7 pm; Saturdays 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.; and Sundays 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Gallery may also be found open at various other times based on availability of volunteer staffing or for special events.
